Recognising the role of science in agriculture's future

In its latest policy position paper the AIA called for sufficient ongoing investment in, and support of innovation to help drive agriculture forward in Australia.

It also highlighted the essential role of extension and science education at all levels to meet these goals.

AIA Chair Andrew Bishop said a failure to recognise and support the role science played in underpinning agricultural advancements could result in the sector losing the ability to compete internationally, and in some zones and industries, to remain sustainable.

“Without science and innovation playing a key role in agriculture, the often transformative developments taking place in the industry would not be possible,” he said.

“Improved productivity, more resilient systems to deal with climate change and variability, as well as improved biosecurity and animal welfare are just some of those advances.

“This policy statement detailed important aspects needed to enhance, support, and develop innovations including strategic approaches, funding, and the critical role of the Research and Development Corporation (RDC) model.”

The AIA’s policies on the critical role of science in agriculture include:

  • National Primary Industries RD&E Framework to facilitate greater coordination

  • Continued funding and support for the RDC model

  • Establishment of a Land, Water and Climate RDC

  • Ensuring strategic rather than prescriptive research

  • Promotion of science education

  • Metrics for university performance
