Tony Grant said he has informed the NSW Nationals leadership team that at the Party Room meeting on November 14 he would be standing down as Leader of the NSW Nationals.

"It has been an incredible privilege to serve in that role and lead a team whose sole focus is to serve the people of regional NSW," Mr Grant said.

"At all times I have been guided by my principles of honesty, integrity and hard work but I accept the result in Orange is a clear message that we haven't always got it right, nor have we always taken the community with us," he said.

"Regional NSW is full of hard-working, decent people that want to see their Government supporting them and otherwise let them live their lives as they see fit. I hope that through my actions the NSW Government is given the opportunity to pause and reset the way it is seen to be governing and our record of delivery can once more be front and centre."

Grant told media he deeply regretted the outcome of the Orange by-election and was severely disappointed in the result.

National Party Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said the leader of the NSW National Party and Deputy Prime Minister to Mike Baird had not shown good judgement and welcomed a leadership spill.

"My prediction over time is this was going to happen at some stage, where you get a number of bad decisions made based on bad judgement, can only go on for so long," Mr Humphries said

"So to say that Orange hasn't been a disaster is an understatement," he said.
