The event was originally scheduled for 1-2 March but organisers made the decision to cancel the field days this week.

Field Days president Sam Eagle said the committee made the extremely difficult decision because of the risk to the community given the widespread impact of the coronavirus.

"There have been so many aspects to consider, but at the end of the day we have a duty of care to our local community," Eagle said.

"We have exhibitors travelling to the region from all over Australia; it's not just local businesses attending.

"We were also concerned about the number of volunteers needed to run the event and the potential impact isolation rules in the lead-up and during the event."

Eagle added that the committee worked in consultation with relevant health organisations and personnel before making its decision. He said the committee left its decision as late as possible in the hope the impact from the current strain of the coronavirus diminished significantly.

However, Eagle said unfortunately there was no guarantee this would be the case in time for the 2022 field days.

"We are devastated for our local businesses that have always supported the field days."

Another casualty of the current outbreaks of Omicron is the Riverine Plains Innovation Expo, which has been postponed until July.

The Expo was scheduled for 9-11 February at Yarrawonga, Victoria, and Mulwala, New South Wales, but the Riverine Plains Board voted last week to postpone the event.

Riverine Plains said the decision was made on the advice provided to the Board by its Events Team and was particularly driven by its social responsibility to deliver safe environments for its members, non-members, suppliers, exhibitors and speakers.
