If you want to get an idea of how well your legumes are fixing nitrogen, the first thing to do is to dig a couple of plants up, wash the roots and count the nodules. It won't tell you the whole story, but it is a start, Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries senior soil microbiologist Dr Nikki Seymour advises.
